Especially those who are already alienated or left out of things because their food allergies make it unsafe for them to go certain places. I didn't complain about the movie, but I did warn people I know who have kids with allergies about the scene, just because it can be extremely upsetting for some kids. Like, if the character had epilepsy and the rabbits used strobe lights to trigger a seizure, I feel like more people would have been upset. I don't think that kids movies should be totally sanitized, but I do get concerned when medical issues are used against a character. The friend was like "you have your epipen, what's the big deal?!" And the big deal is that after an allergic reaction like that, you get rushed to the hospital, are treated for hours, if not overnight, and in some cases, makes future allergic reactions even more severe.so there is definitely danger in making it seem like allergies aren't a big deal at all. I have a family member (a small child) with a fatal allergy and her friend did see this film and then got annoyed with her when she asked about ingredients in their snack (which she is supposed to do, and she's supposed to read the package or give it a trusted adult, even if she's been told that it's fine). The epipen "'solves" the allergic reaction. I put the time and effort in to set out a reasoned argument to add to the discussion - the least you could do is afford me the same courtesy in return. I didn't complain about this film, and I wouldn't have stopped it being made, but saying that the filmmakers have absolutely no responsibility whatsoever for the consequences of their own actions (by saying it's 100% the parents' responsibility) I do find baffling.Įdit: Guys, disagree with me by all means, but don't just use downvotes to suppress an opinion you don't agree with - it's poor Reddiquette. On top of that there were far worse things done than the allergy scene.ĭoing something worse doesn't excuse doing something bad. If she had appreciated how serious it was, I don't think she would have done it. So saying that they were attempting to kill a child is disengenous.īut yes, I don't think the child realised how life threatening what she was doing actually was, and that's the problem. More than one party can be responsible.Īs you yourself said, kids really don't understand the consequences of their actions, so even the best parents my struggle to get them to understand how serious something is. A film designed for children can't just show whatever it wants and then say it's not their problem and the parents can deal with it. It's not 100% a parenting problem, though, which is what I was saying.
